This is perfect proof of why the Old Media in Meatspace just don't get what's going on with the Internet. No one can possibly attack an "organization" that is effectively an anarchic hive mind. So, what's the count up to now? The New York Times, Oprah, and now a Fox affilite... Any more out there I haven't heard of yet?

Fire at Applebee’s

I sometimes wonder if perhaps drunkenness might be contagious. This was at the end of a long night at Applebee’s with a couple of my friends. None of us had any alcohol that night, and yet, at least one of us was acting plastered. It’s worth noting thought that he is from a family on non-smokers, so the debacle with the smoker’s outpost is at least partially understandable.

The napkin he was attempting to incinerate was soaked in oil lifted from the dynamite sauce that had come with our dinner. It’s a chili/lime sauce that is supposed to be similar to a mayonnaise, but sometimes the emulsion does not hold, leaving the unfortunate diner with a puddle of greasy globs of goo.

Musing About Medicine

Firstly, I will admit that this is an ad for an alternative-medicine book, but the numbers are mostly correct. Also, I've seen much of this first hand in my own health and healthcare. I have been on Norvasc to control my hypertension for some time now. It lost it's patent protection a few years ago, leading to the introduction of reasonably priced generics. To combat this, Pfizer introduced a combined drug called Caduet that includes both amlodipine (a.k.a. Norvasc) and a still-patented statin drug, Lipitor. This has led many doctors to prescribe Caduet instead of amlodipine and a statin separately, thereby preventing patients from having access to generics. Also, many doctors are prescribing Caduet as a preventative, despite the increase in cost and associated risks of statins. I know this was the case with my healthcare; I was prescribed Caduet despite not having any indications for statin use. Also, with my insurance, Caduet cost me over $70.00 USD. Whereas, the brand-name Norvasc cost about $20.00 USD. The real shock came when I was finally able to switch to generic amlodipine: $5.00 USD! All of this in the name of profit, not healthcare.

Media and Popular Opinion

This is in some ways a response to my last post, but even so, it stands well on its own. The video above raises some interesting points about the power of modern media to influence popular opinion in this nation. I'm still perturbed that Dr. Ron Paul has received as little attention in mainstream news as he has thus far. However, the dangers of being on the wrong side of the Media can be seen almost as clearly in the ongoing struggle between Senators Obama and Clinton. The comparison of Google Trends data and number of hits on YouTube! for various candidates does provide some interesting numbers to consider. A good Google Trends search here shows all of them together and restricted to searches from the US, within the last twelve months.

McCain's YouTube Problem Just Became a Nightmare

I never thought I liked McCain, so I didn't need much more reason to avoid him if at all possible. However, the contents of this video would have been enough to turn me against him even had I been out on the streets campaigning for him initially.

I wish I could reed more of the Chinese in this video than just the date, but as stands, it's still a very touching tribute to the victims of the May twelfth earthquake in Sichuan province. My prayers and condolences go out to all those who have suffered in this tragedy. Also, my heartfelt thanks and congratulations to all those who were willing and able to rise to the cause and give of their time and substance to support those in this time of great need. If only the strength of the human spirit could continues to shine through times of joy as well as it does in times of sorrow.

Benny Hinn: Let the Bodies Hit the Floor

I don't know if I should find this offensive or not. However, given my history on both sides of the religious fence, I think everyone can benefit from this. Those who know the song probably won't find anything wrong with it; those who don't know the song or artist but do know Benny Hinn, will at most write it off as more of "those annoying young people." To be honest, I have no clue as to which side the creator was on when this was made, but it does have surprisingly good choreography. Also, the amount of time it would have taken to go through enough video from "This is Your Day" to get all of this is stunning!

Why I'd rather be using an impact printer...

Also, I almost never print in color, but with at least two of the inkjet printers I've owned refused to print in black ink only without fiddling with setting -- this even when printing black text.

Also, I have to give them credit for better cinematic construction; opening with something of a striptease is always a good way to catch and hold an audience's attention. Although, the font in the credits could have been chosen better -- such as something legible....

It seems that Dell has opted to respond to Apple MacBook Air not with a new super-light portable but with the production of the world's most spacious envelop. Perhaps they will make the super envelopes available sans PC, and I can finally store all of the strange cables and adapter doohickeys I've accumulated over all the years I've been collecting technology antiques.

I can understand the Government wanting to be a part of the new world of the Internet, but this is simply proving the incompetence of our government. Also, how can an X-ray image be sensitive information? Basic physics dictates that the results should be a density map of the contents of the object in question. Therefore, a person with Photoshop or the GIMP and the freely available images of the MacBook Air's internals could construe a reasonable facsimile of an X-ray sans equipment. Also, anyone can get a pretty good look at the results of an airport X-ray scan while at an airport.

Star Wars vs. Saul Bass

This is one of the wittiest Star Wars makeovers I've seen in some time. It leaves me wondering what would come of applying this sort of aesthetic to the three new films as a whole. (It couldn't be much worse than it already is, and if there is a chance of Jar Jar meeting a timely and comedic end in some sort of construed, abstract death trap, all the better.)

Supermarket Dominoes

So this is what all those stock boys are doing in all-night supermarkets in out-of-the-way locations that get no traffic. I wonder if it was just workers playing around or an official event. I just wish I could understand what they are saying and recognize some of the brands. Also, if anyone knows what supermarket chain this is, I'd love to know.

Bioshock reviewed by ZeroPunctuation

This is possibly the best review of Bioshock I've seen yet. I was promised so much when this game was in development, but so much of the games potential seems to have been lost in order to bring it to the consoles. Also, the hacking system is both annoying and simple at the same time; the only punishment it offers can be completely mitigated via obsessive saving. Also, the commentary on the two outcomes does point to a decline in the quality of games these days. I will forever stand in awe at the number of ending Riven possesses; only recently did I discover that I had missed several of them after having replayed the game multiple times over the years.

Google Drive killer coming from MIT Startup

Ok, so I've used software before that claimed to do all this and more, but none of it worked all that well -- this was especially true of the free, online drive programs available in the nineties. Hopefully this will work out better than those pre-bubble ones. Also, Microsoft Sky Drive is something to look into for a current take on this sort of thing.

Intel builds 100,000 45 nm CPUs - every day

While I've always been a supporter of AMD, I must admit that Intel is the more promising of the two companies at the moment. I'm impressed by the performance I get out of my new Mac Pro, and I'm certainly looking forward to the day when Intel can integrate more special-purpose cores into Nehalem. I think the re-merging of CPU and GPU hardware is just the beginning of a wonderful future.

GOOD Magazine: Business of Death

I discovered this on Dvorak.org/blog, and I was amused by how peppy and up-beat the music choice was. Also, the vital statistics of Death are something most people never really think about in this modern world of ours. I know I want a rental casket for my funeral service and a stable but eco-friendly softwood box for my actual burial. However, if it could be done more efficiently, I would not mind cremation and conversion into pencils that could be given as souvenirs to the funeral goers. That option would also mean that I could you me to sign my funeral service guest book. (Is that as disturbing as it seems? I mean, it didn't seem so bad before I actually typed it out... I wonder if it's an indicator of something serious, or simply the product of Lack of Sleep™?)
